Diane Keaton plays a mature mother who finds herself nursing perennial bachelor Harry Sanborn (Nicholson) back to health after he experiences heart problems while on a romantic getaway with her daughter (played by Amanda Peet).Harry normally goes for younger women but soon finds himself strangely attracted to someone closer to his own age. But I think just even the intimacy of it and the fact that theres so much that you cant really share with each other in some way the experiences that youve been through that they cant really understand because theyre not there. It isnt also just age but the kind of work you do. Is that a 'been there-done that' type of thing for you? Its sort of interesting when you put it that way because you think Been there, done that. How delicate a balance is it to be funny in a scene where your character doesnt know shes being funny?I didnt really like it very much and I dont think he liked it either. It was sort of like, Yeah No Was that a societal thing? I dont know how or why some people know how to do it, but they do. I think that because its what I have done all my life, I kind of get it.You and Jack Nicholson have great onscreen chemistry. Can you talk about what it was like to shoot that love scene with him? It feels like that because I think theres something about the way Jack uses language. I thought, Its going to be a womans body and thats the way it is. Its okay, itll do.Well you know, working with Jack is sort of like standing in front of the Grand Canyon. Its like hes a master of the word, and the love of the word. I didnt mind doing a lot of takes and Nancy always likes to do a lot of takes. I just had to show up and expect a lot of kissing (laughing). Can you talk about that scene in terms of its celebration of older women?
It's only after Harry suffers a heart attack at Erica's beach house that he starts seeing her with flirty eyes.
I dont know, theres too much going on there and youre just this little speck on a precipice. A kiss is like you put the words away and youre just standing there and youre just sort of, Oh, its just you and me and were really going to just experience this without saying anything. Its just beautiful. You and Jack Nicholson have known each other for a long time, havent you? I think that that was Nancys intention, and God bless her. When you saw the completed picture, how did it compare to your expectations? She was a very meticulous, detailed director in that Nancy was very precise about the words. Im just going to enjoy every aspect of the kissing and the hugging and the yelling and screaming and being in love because I know its not coming my way again.
Keanu Reeves falls hard for a more mature woman in the romantic comedy Somethings Gotta Give, starring Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton.
Meyers, whose is the biggest hit ever directed by a woman, brings sparkle and sting to the party, even if she does let some scenes go on too long and underuses the fine Francis Mc Dormand as Erica's sister.
"Some say I'm an expert on the younger woman -- since I've been dating them for 40 years."Who's talking here?
